Handcrafted Alder Barrel Whisky Tumbler

  • £22.00

Our Barrel whisky tumblers are carefully hand crafted using a Swedish carving axe and drawknife to shape the outside of the tumbler. They are then turned on the foot operated pole lathe using various wood turning gouges and chisels to achieve a smooth, natural finish. Using the primitive fire by friction tradition, 2 hooped lines are then burnt onto both the top and bottom of the tumbler using a wooden ash shaving.

Our tumblers offer unique and distinct properties to enhance your drinking pleasure, which cannot be found in glass. Over time, they begin to retain the notes and flavour of whisky, just like the wooden casks that matured these characteristics originally. Due to the natural materials and handcrafted process involved in every individual tumbler we create, you will experience a uniqueness of warmth and tactile qualities which cannot be replicated in any modern day mass production.

Please read our 'Before Ordering' uniqueness statement below before placing your tumbler order. Our signature Gedwood and personalised handwritten message examples can be seen in the photos opposite.

As every single Gedwood product is carefully handcrafted and no two are ever the same, it's not always possible to show all individual products and their naturally unique variations. As such, to provide you with a quick and easy browsing process and avoid the need to look through several products with a similar appearance, we have some product ranges where it's more practical to give you an example guide photo. This example guide photo shows both the wood species and the product style you will receive, however the exact grain detail will be personally selected by our Master Craftsman and be something truly unique to you. If you are looking for specific grain details, please contact us prior to placing an order to discuss further.

Tumblers, coasters and gates:
Please note that all images for our whisky tumblers, coasters and handmade gates are for illustrative purposes only, to act as an indicative guide to the design style of your chosen product.

The handcrafted product you receive will be made from the wood species you have specified, however due to the unique characteristics of each product, variations can occur in grain colour, size and grain pattern and will naturally be different from the example photos shown. As every product we make is skilfully handcrafted and completely one of a kind made from naturally sourced materials, each product will look totally and beautifully unique and be completely exclusive to you. Our products are individually hand-carved using traditional methods and so tool marks, imperfections and natural edges form part of the natural product charm.

Display stand sets and stools:
Our range of whisky tumbler display stand sets and handcrafted stools are sold as seen in our photos, so what you see is the exact grain colour, size and grain pattern you’ll receive. Our products are individually hand-carved using traditional methods and so tool marks, imperfections and natural edges form part of the natural product charm.

Please carefully note our following allergy information about products which may not be suitable for someone with a severe nut allergy.

Tumblers: Treated with walnut oil first to bring out the grain and colour of the wood, then sealed with beeswax to waterproof them.

Coasters: Treated with walnut oil which enhances and brings out the grain of the wood beautifully and also helps to stop liquid staining.

Wild Cherry: Wild Cherry (or Gean) features a very attractive two tone mid brown heartwood and pale cream to sapwood, (depending on the ratio of heartwood to sapwood), with a distinct grain pattern. Generally uniform grain in appearance, with subtly defined growth rings.

Ash: Ash is typically a lighter coloured wood of white to light cream with an attractive distinct grain pattern. The sapwood is not distinguishable from heartwood, and occasionally an irregular dark brown heart wood contrasting with the paler sapwood features known as olive ash. Growth rings are very distinct in Ash.

Willow: Features a light brown heartwood to pale cream sapwood sometimes with attractive brown streaks and flecks randomly features in the grain of the wood. Straight grained wood with visible growth rings.

Sycamore: The timber is a lovely creamy colour with a natural lustre. It darkens somewhat on exposure to light, becoming golden in appearance. Sycamore has a subtle figure, with visible growth rings. Occasionally light green flecks can occur in the grain pattern. Rippled sycamore has a beautiful wavy figure, caused by varying grain direction.

Alder: Alder when first cut can be a rather intense shade of orange, but this fades over time until the timber becomes a lovely warm light orange-brown colour. It has a fine texture with subtly defined growth rings. Its most noticeable and attractive feature being the dark streaks (medullary rays) that occur throughout the timber.
